With all the products out there, building a skin care regime that works for you can be quite daunting. I've always found that mainstream products irritate and/or dry out my skin because of the ingredients they contain. Over the last months I have either purchased or worked with black owned brands that offer skin care products and have built a routine that works wonders for my skin. Here are some tips and information on my routine and where you can get your Black Owned Skin Care products:
STEP 1- cleanse
Cleansing your face is key to removing the dirt and dust trapped in your pores from the day. Certain cleansers I find however are too harsh on my skin or dry it out.
My cleanser of choice is the Tea Tree & Witch Hazel Replenishing Deep Pore Facial Cleanser from Irie Rock - a black owned Jamaican business that specialises in skin and body care with products in Paks in the UK. Tea Tree & Witch Hazel are natural ingredients featured in many skin care products due to their antibacterial and antioxidant properties. This cleanser also contains Salicyclic acid which is an anti-acne agent.
As well as a cleanser I use a facial brush on the lowest setting in order to cleanse my face thoroughly.
STEP 2- tone
I hardly ever toned my skin prior to receiving this product but it most definitely has given my skin the boost it needed over these past months. Toning, I've learnt, is a very important step in the skin care process - it removes any left over dirt from the cleansing step but also soothes, nourishes and hydrates whilst restoring your skin's pH balance.
This Lavender RefreshMINT toner is from Bourn Beautiful Naturals - a black owned company specialising in skin, body and haircare. With ingredients like lavender hydrosol, aloe vera juice and peppermint hydrosol also helps to fade any scarring on the face.
STEP 3- moisturise
Use of creams on my face has become a thing of the past since I discovered aloe vera gel - I started using it after having an allergic reaction having used baby wipes on my face. Since then it has become a consistent staple in my skin care routine. I purchased this Aloe Vera & Seaweed Gel from Pure Goodness - a British Black Owned brand I have purchased from many times before. They offer everything from oils and soaps to deodrant and body creams.
Aloe Vera has been used in natural remedies for centuries for its soothing and restorative properties. It is rich in proteins, collagen, elastin, amino acids, enzymes, vitamins and minerals which soften and recondition the skin, and maintain a healthy, youthful complexion. Seaweed has detoxifying properties and aids in skin healing.
STEP 4- seal
The last step prior to putting on any make up is to seal in the gel with an oil. The oil I trust the most is Aromatherapy Scar Repair Oil from Shalshani. It contains oils such as sunflower, moringa, lavender and hemp that really aid my skin to maintain a youthful glow. The oil, in my opinion, acts as a great base layer prior to applying my foundation too.
Paying attention to the products and the ingredients in my skin care regime has really benefited my skin's overall health. I still get breakouts if I use the wrong wipes or eat the wrong thing but I know exactly how to get my skin back in it's best condition.
I hope this has helped! Be sure to check out each of the Black Owned Businesses!
