Chale Socks: Repping the roots head to toe.

September 2, 2016

A little while ago we were sent some Chale socks and they are so cute!

Chale socks (http://www.chaleclothing.com) are a Black-owned UK business founded by Kurtis Kudjo in 2014 out of the genuine desire to promote African cultural symbolism and colours through vibrant, contemporary socks.

If you don't know, Adinkra symbols were created by the Ashanti of Ghana and the Gyaman of Cote d'Ivoire in West Africa. They represent concepts or aphorisms and are usually found on pottery and cloth.

The oldest Adinkra cloth found dates back to 1817  when an Englishmen was given some and there seems to be little information on Adinkra prior to that...or little research.

For the first time in my life, I have actually managed to keep a pair of socks together just because I really love the socks, their purpose and meaning.  To have something that is functional but still represents pride for African heritage adds a little bounce in your step.

I'll be wearing these even when they don't go with my outfit, that's how committed I am.

The socks feature Gye Nyame, Ananse, Duafe and more Adinkra symbols in a variety of bright and colourful patterns.  They are great for adults and for children so definitely check out the socks for gifts or as a special buy for yourself!
